Why canapos;t we set up a public health system the same way we have a public education system? In the current educational system as I understand it the federal government requires states to provide free public education but allows the states to administer their own programs. The feds provide a certain amount of funding and the states and towns in those states fund the rest. What would be wrong with that? In the same way that we have public schools that provide the same basic education to everyone for free, with optional private schools for people who prefer them, we could have public hospitals, free to every citizen, which provide a basic level of care. There could also be private hospitals for people who prefer them.
There are a lot of kinks to work out but why canapos;t we do something like that?
